German Dominican Friar, his experience in preaching and selling indulgences between 1503 and 1510 led to his appointment by Albrecht, the Archbishop of Mainz. Tetzel “preached” indulgences in Magdeburg and Halberstadt, but was forbidden by Frederick the Wise III from selling indulgences in Saxony. When Tetzel preached in Jüterbog, not far from Wittenberg, Luther finally had enough and produced his Ninety-Five Theses. In 1518 Tetzel withdrew to Leipzig priory, and he died shortly thereafter.
