Martin Luther

Luther was born in Eisleben to hard working parents who wanted their son to be a lawyer. At 22 years old he graduated at the top of his class, but plagued by spiritual doubts, he abandoned his legal career. During a violent thunderstorm he cried out a vow to become a monk. Against his father’s wishes, he became a part of the Observant Augustinian Friars in Erfurt.

Johann von Staupitz, Vicar General of Luther’s order, gave spiritual consolation to the restless monk. In 1507, Luther was ordained to the priesthood and began to study theology. One year later he began teaching at the newly formed University of Wittenberg.
