Onesimus put distance between his master, Philemon, and himself. He was in a place where they had church, but whatever they preached had little or no effect, because he still moved far away from his master. It wasn’t until contact with Paul that Onesimus went back and became a fellow laborer. The hardest thing to do sometimes is to go back and start over; going back to the place that you failed. But, Onesimus reminds us there’s always a way home. Like the prodigal, there’s always enough bread in the Father’s house to spare, because we all stand in the same place: sinners being saved by grace.
