The concept of Purgatory went from a vague idea applied to unbelievers in Augustine’s time to an official doctrine applied to the faithful by the time of Pope Leo the Great. It is not sound doctrine, as it is based on a few scriptures out of context and contradicts many other statements Christ made about His work, the Spirit and Heaven. It is important to ask questions, and the answers must align with the Bible.
