Bembo, Pietro

A master of elegant diction, Bembo established the Italian literary language. He studied at Florence and came to Rome with one of the De’Medici family. In 1513, he became secretary to Pope Leo X in Rome. Upon Leo’s death, he retired to Padua. He was appointed librarian at St. Mark’s Cathedral. In 1539 he is recalled to Rome and created cardinal.
