CARDINAL CAJETAN

(1469–1534)

button right
Bembo, Pietro

Dominican theologian and philosopher. It is said that after his many years of Thomistic study, he could recite Thomas Aquinas’ Summa Theologica from memory.

In 1517 he was created cardinal by Pope Leo X. It was decided that based on Cajetan’s theological learning and his disposition he would be the most successful in dealing with the “obstinate monk” Luther.

During the Sack of Rome in 1527, Cajetan along with other key figures was seized. He paid his ransom of 5,000 Roman crowns of gold. He was one of 19 cardinals who vouched for the validity of Henry VIII marriage to Catherine of Aragon. He died later that year, buried at the church of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva.
