Thomas Muntzer

Muntzer was a fiery and apocalyptic preacher and rebel leader during the Peasants’ War (1524–1525). He believed that Luther’s approach to questioning religious practices should also be applied to the economic practices of the day.

Luther distances himself from Muntzer, who was intent on creating civil disorder during the Peasants’ War. Muntzer was eventually captured, tortured and decapitated.
