Spalatin was a prolific writer, humanist and friend to Martin Luther.
1508 – Spalatin is ordained a priest and becomes tutor to the heir of Frederick III the Wise, Elector of Saxony.
1511 – He is made preceptor to Frederick’s nephews, who were studying at Wittenberg, where Spalatin first met Luther.
1512 – Spalatin becomes Frederick’s librarian, gaining his trust. It is in this time frame that Spalatin passes on his admiration for Luther to Frederick.
1518 – He persuades Frederick to protect Luther during the controversy over indulgences. This action is important to the progress of the Reformation. Spalatin helps Luther receive a more favorable reception at the Diet of Worms.
1530 – Spalatin works with Melanchthon, preparing and presenting the Augsburg Confession.
