The 9th of 21 children, Spengler became an active supporter of Luther. He designed the "Luther Rose," a widely recognized symbol of Lutheranism. Spengler also composed many hymns which are still sung in some churches to this day.
1491 – Attended Leipzig University until his father died in 1496, returning to his home town of Nuremberg
1507 – Becomes the town clerk
1518 – First meets Luther when he is passing through Nuremberg
1519 – Spengler is an active supporter of Luther. Spengler’s name appears in the Papal Bull.
"Exsurge Domine" as Luther and his followers face the threat of excommunication.
1521 – Spengler is excommunicated with Luther January 3rd. Spengler has the support of his town council and in April he is sent as a town delegate to the Diet of Worms
1530 – Spengler would participate in the Diet of Augsburg where he defends Lutheranism
